These Adidas AX1 are more like a running shoe with lug sole. They have a firm heel not really cushioned like an "air" or "gel" shoe. I would say it is like a hiking shoe with the flexibility of an athletic shoe. Not necessarily what you would want for an all day hike with a pack but, tons of traction for light day hike or excursion. This might be the perfect shoe for an ultra-light hiker who normally hikes in running shoes.Just got mine so I can't comment on durability yet. They are sized small so you should order at least a 1/2 size up. I wear an 11 to 11 1/2 normally and needed a 12 in these.
