I got these because I have never used poles before, but as I age I find my grace leaves something to be desired. Anyway, I am not one who really abuses equipment any more than I have to. So far I have put about 20 miles on these from two seperate day hikes, one being fairly active with hills, creek crossings, and such. I am 155 pounds and usually carry about 20 extra pounds with clothes & gear. The poles have held up to with no signs of weakness. They bear weight without any give, and support just fine. I have no idea how long they will last, but I will say that they have convinced my to keep using poles in the future, so for entry level poles, they do what they are supposed to do.

I walk 75% blacktop and 25% dirt trails and so far so good. I've put about 300 miles on these poles and they work fine. I plan on getting new tips because are already very worn. I replaced the tips with Leki# 8-815-003 they fit perfect. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trekking Poles, December 2, 2010

The Mountainsmith Rhyolite Trekking poles were immensely helpful to me on my day hike down the Bright Angel trail of the Grand Canyon. I descended over 3000 feet into the canyon and came back up covering more than nine miles in about five hours. I am fifty five years old and not in top condition but the poles allowed me to cover the distance with less sore muscles and fatigue. A struggling hiker on his way up when I was going down asked if I was willing to sell him my poles. I thought about selling but thought to myself, how will I make it back up? A great buy, especially for the price.
